wavy comb

On Monday, March 22, 2021, Peter Yun interviewed Adah Shimanovich about the object Wavy Comb, the subject of their focus throughout the Spring 2021 semester of Rutgers Design 1B.

Peter Yun:Why did you choose this comb?

Adah Shimanovich: My sister graduated college several years ago, and I use her room a lot when i'm home, and for the longest time, this comb has been lying around on her dresser. In a way, it's kind of personal to me as it slightly reminds me of her. I also just find it to be really interesting with it's waviness and golden color and I felt that it would provide me with a lot to work on throughout the semester.

PY : If you could change the color of the comb, what color would you change it to and why? If you wouldn’t, why not?

AS : I wouldn't change the color of the comb, because I think it works very well. The waviness introduces a kind of softness, lightheartedness and innocence which I think a pale yellow/gold helps support. A second color that might work is a pastel pink, because I think it gives off similar vibes, although it would feel less natural because it's a cooler color.

PY : I know the comb’s wiggly teeth was something that visually interested you, but is there another shape that the comb could have taken that you also would have been interested in?

AS : I think just any shape that is out of the ordinary for combs would have interested me. If not waviness, it could maybe take the shape of soemthing interesting rather than just being a rectangular comb. I also think combs with different sections with different types of teeth are interesting; for example, a comb where half of it has teeth that are more tightly packed and the other half has thicker teeth that are further apart.

PY : Has investigating the comb visually made you more aware of things about it?

AS : The amount of investigating I did with the comb really did bring to my attention things I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't been studying it. For example, I noticed a lot of connotations my comb could have, such as playfullness or fairytales.
